Zdenek Burian

Recently I came across Burian's work via Matthes & Seitz BerlinZdenek Burian was a very prolific painter and book illustrator with about 14000 illustrations and book covers. He is best known for his visual reconstructions of prehistoric life and regarded as the most influential palaeo-artist of the modern era. "Prehistoric Animals" ("Tiere der Urzeit") was originally published in Czechoslovakia by Artia in 1956.

Jaz Parkinson: Colour Signatures

Jaz Parkinson creates book covers which show how often a colour occurs in books like George Orwell's "1984" and Anthony Burgess' "A Clockwork Orange". Visit her blog where she reveals more of this project and how she puts the colours in spectrum, graph and draw them. Here is her to-do/done list with books. Exciting!

Jon Klassen: Das ist nicht mein Hut / This Is Not My Hat

I was waiting for this great one to be published in German: "This Is Not My Hat" by brilliant writer and illustrator Jon Klassen, originally published in 2012 by Candlewick Press and now in German by Swiss publisher NordSüd Verlag. It is not a sequel of Jon Klassen's first best-selling hat book "I Want My Hat Back". The pale blue bowler is just an abstract object like the red hat in the first book. What can I say? It's fabulous! The story is about a little fish who has stolen a hat from a much larger fish ("It was too small for him anyway"). The monologue contradicts every scene and in the end the dark-coloured pictures say more than words could say. I like the subtle humor when the little fish thinks he has gotten away with his offence ...
Jon Klassen won the Caldecott Medal for "This Is Not My Hat". He also illustrated "The Dark", written by Lemony Snicket, that was selected among the "10 Best Illustrated Children's Books of 2013" by The New York Times.

Just the eyes ...

"Wo ist mein Hut" was awarded with the "Deutscher Jugendliteraturpreis". Purchase your copy in German here or here

Aleksandra Mizielinska / Daniel Mizielinski: Alle Welt / Maps

Warsaw-based illustrators Aleksandra Mizielinska and Daniel Mizielinski are the founders of Hipopotam Studio, specialized in designing children's books and creating online, interactive projects. They can list already a whole range of books in their portfolio. This one has been originally published in Polish by Wydawnictwo Ddwie Siostry in 2012, in German by Moritz Verlag and in English by Big Picture Press. It's perfect in order to explain the world with its different landscapes and culture to kids. This book contains literally a whole world of stories. The illustrations are just wonderful. It's a real pleasure to delve into those beautifully designed highformat pages. Though some stereotypes are borrowed, it's done in a charming and often amusing way, so it's fun to find out which characteristics are used by the illustrators (who spend three years to create this book with all its details and curiosities). Check out their Mapmaker as well and their great book collection!
